I am originally from
Alaska, where I completed a six year apprenticeship under
the guidance of a master builder. As his sole apprentice, I
received his undivided attention as he imparted his vast
knowledge and skills to me via day to day hands on
experience.
During these years, I learned how to build a house
from the foundation to the roof, which included everything
from framing, insulating and door and window installations
to gib fixing, stopping and painting. I then moved on to
learning the ins and outs of tiling, bench top construction,
joinery and finish carpentry.
After completing
my apprenticeship, I began my career as a self-employed
builder, learning additional lessons that had less to do
with building and more to do with running a reputable
business. Organising a job so it runs smoothly from
beginning until completion, maintaining reliable
communication with clients, presenting honest and
straightforward quotes and invoices in a timely fashion,
keeping a tidy job site and ensuring everyone involved is
satisfied with the finished product – these are the same
business guidelines I brought with me to New Zealand when I
shifted here fifteen years ago to be with my partner Mary.
Since then, I have completed hundreds of jobs
around the Selwyn District and look forward to doing many
